Counseling in a School Setting

School Counselors work with students, teachers, parents, and administrators to help ensure that students' educational, vocational, and emotional needs are being met. School counselors provide crisis intervention services and individual and group counseling to help all students develop their educational, social, career, and personal strengths and become responsible and productive citizens. They are perceived as problem solvers, although a more accurate description is to describe them as professionally trained educators who help students, parents, and teachers solve problems. School counselors are trained to confer with all enrollees, regardless of each student's abilities or disabilities. They also work closely with principals, teachers, health professionals, and parents.

Students graduating from the program having completed the requirements for the School emphasis are endorsed for counseling in K-12 school settings in the state of South Dakota .  This program emphasis accredited by the Council of Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP), the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE), and the State of South Dakota, Division of Education (DOE). The program prepares students for endorsement/certification as a school counselor in the state of South Dakota .  Should the student seek endorsement in another state, it is that student’s responsibility to meet any additional requirements by that particular state.
